Former French national coach Raymond Domenech (2004-2010) was not the most popular person in France during his tenure. His tinkering with systems drove players, the media and fans crazy. One of his wackiest moments was admitting that astrology plays a part in his team selections.
Domenech who was born under the Aquarius star sign (born 24 January 1952) had a particular dislike for Scorpios and left out players such as Robert Pires (born 29 October 1973) from his 2006 World Cup squad. At the time, the revelation did not receive bad press rather humorous ridicule because the French national team was performing rather well (they reached the World Cup final that year).
Pires a class act was past his prime, though the same could have been said of Lilian Thuram, Zinedine Zidane and Fabian Barthez who made the cut and are in the same ‘class act category.’ The simple idea of denying yourself a good player because of his sign is absolutely bonkers. Domenech had this to say “All parameters have to be considered and I have added one by saying there is astrology involved”.
He is not to keen on Leos as defenders either, ” When I have got a Leo in defence, I’ve always got my gun ready, as I know he’s going to want to show off at one moment or another and cost us,” Domenech confessed.
As a Scorpio (The name of the site gives me away) I find Domenech’s stance on us interesting because if anything Scorpios are excellent team players and have a burning desire to win. Two of the greats of the game Diego Maradona and Pele were Scorpios and won World Cups, so it’s not like they hindered their teams efforts, quite the opposite!
When you look at Domenech’s sign closer you begin to realize that the issue lies with the man. In terms of compatibility charts, Aquarius and Scorpio signs have a ‘difficult’ relationship. Perhaps Domenech feared that Pires would ignore his orders (Scorpios have stubbornness listed as one of their negative traits). But his own knack of experimentation ,an Aquarius trait, led to mutiny by his own players at the 2010 World Cup in South Africa and his unceremonious dismissal.
Domenech is currently out of the management scene. Potential suitors preferring to interview candidates with orthodox views of management no doubt.
